Fire protection of wood: main methods and their effectiveness


To successfully perform fire protection, suitable tools and technologies are required. To select, you need to know certain characteristics of materials - both protected and fire-resistant: flammability, flammability and others. There are regulatory documents that classify materials according to these criteria. One of the classifications is wood fire protection groups.

How is the flammability group of wooden structures determined?

There are different methods for determining the degree of protection of a material from fire. Let’s say that to classify the fire resistance of metals, a sample is heated to a critical temperature and the heating time in minutes is chosen as the main indicator.

The fire-retardant efficiency group of wood is determined differently. Here the main indicator is the loss of mass by the material during fire tests. A sample treated with a fire retardant using one technology or another is heated. The effectiveness of fire protection varies depending on the product chosen.

Protection of cable coverings and fabrics

Grouping for cable coatings occurs after assessing the length of damage or charring of the sample cable lining. In this case, the methodology set out in GOST R 53311-2009 is used. The coating is acceptable for use if the main indicator does not exceed 1.5 m.

The classification of fire retardant impregnations for flammable fabrics is carried out according to GOST R 50810-95. For other textile materials, furniture upholstery, bed linen, the methodology set out in NPB-257-2002 is followed.

What fire protection groups exist for wooden structures?

The division of wood materials into fire protection groups based on the results of tests for weight loss is reflected in GOST R 53292-2009. There are three such groups:

  • Group 1 wood fire protection implies the maximum level of fire resistance. Weight loss during fire tests is within 9%, fire resistance limit is 150 minutes. Such fire protection is used in crowded places and at critical facilities;
  • fire protection of wood group 2 – low-flammable wood. Weight loss up to 25%, fire resistance limit 90 minutes;
  • Group 3 – minimum level of protection, weight loss over 25%.

In addition to classification by mass loss tests, wood is subject to the same requirements and standards as other materials.

All materials are divided into categories according to several criteria (flammability, smoke generation, combustion toxicity, flammability). The characteristics are reflected in various GOSTs, and categories are also indicated there, starting with zero (the highest degree of safety).

  • K0 – non-flammable materials – GOST 30403;
  • G1 – low-flammable – GOST 30244;
  • B1 – flame-resistant – 30402;
  • T2 – toxic, moderately hazardous – 12.1.044;
  • D2 – moderate smoke-generating – 12.1.044.

In what cases is it necessary to contact our company to organize fire protection measures?

NPB rules 251-98 regulate the fire resistance of various objects depending on their functions. In accordance with these standards, public buildings and especially critical facilities belong to the first fire resistance group.

Corresponding requirements apply to materials.

What it is

The compositions are deep penetration impregnations that prevent the ignition of wood and the spread of open fire.

Another name for such substances is flame retardants: protective components of narrowly targeted action.

It is necessary to apply fire and bioprotection at the initial stages of construction, and not only walls, floors and ceilings are subject to treatment. All elements and auxiliary structures made of wood are impregnated with the composition.

Antipyrines work according to the following scheme:

  • under the influence of temperatures, active substances melt, blocking the access of oxygen to the material;
  • a fire-resistant film is formed, significantly increasing the ignition temperature of wood;
  • The organophosphorus compounds included in the composition cause swelling of the protective film, which eliminates direct contact between the fire and the base.

Most products contain antiseptics that prevent the appearance of pathogenic microflora. Therefore, the building is under double protection.

Fire hazard group and fire-prevention wood treatment

The main fire protection technologies for wood are impregnation with a fire retardant and coating with intumescent paints and varnishes.

There are impregnations of 3 degrees of intensity:

  • superficial. This involves applying a fire retardant compound by spraying or using a hand tool without dismantling the structure. The depth of penetration of the product into the thickness of the wood with this method is from 1 to 5 mm;
  • medium - step-by-step immersion of wood materials in a hot and cold fire retardant solution followed by drying;
  • deep - prolonged soaking in a solution while creating a vacuum inside the chamber.

The operating principle of intumescent coatings is as follows: under standard conditions, the coating forms a thin film, which, when heated, begins to expand and increases its volume tens of times. The resulting coked crust provides resistance to ignition from 15 minutes to 3 hours (depending on the type of product and the thickness of the initial layer). The process occurs with the absorption of heat.

There is no difference in fire retardant effect between paints and varnishes. They differ mainly in decorative properties: the varnish is transparent and preserves the texture of the wood, the paint forms a glossy or matte color coating.

What level of fire protection does this or that composition provide, depending on the consumption, what technology is used for processing - all this information is present in the manufacturer’s instructions for the product.

  • Terma varnish – for interior and exterior work, 1 fire protection group;
  • Defender W paint can be used for interior work, and with a weather-resistant coating - for exterior work. Fire retardant efficiency depends on consumption: group 1 – 0.31 kg per sq.m;
  • Promat Phoenix DP paint is water-soluble, environmentally friendly. Efficiency group 1 is provided at a consumption of 0.32 kg per sq.m. With increasing consumption, the fire resistance limit increases: 15 minutes - 0.5 kg, 30 - 1 kg, 45 - 1.5 kg, etc.;
  • the composition of Promat Phoenix DB is similar to DP in all properties, except for decorativeness: DP emphasizes the texture of wood, DB does not. The consumption to ensure efficiency group 1 is slightly lower for DB, 0.25 kg per sq.m.

IMPREGNATION

Varieties

Fire protection products available on the construction market differ in characteristics, composition and application features. Initially, goods in this category are conditionally divided into two groups:

  1. Impregnations . Active substances penetrate deep into the fibers without changing the texture and appearance of the wood.
  2. Coatings _ The composition is applied superficially, negatively affects the texture, and often has a pronounced chemical odor.

Solutions of the second category are used for utility buildings or residential buildings where additional surface finishing is required.

Based on the type of active substance, fire-bioprotection products are classified as organic and water-soluble. The second type is more suitable for residential buildings.

Products also differ in chemical formula:

  1. Saline . A budget option. It has a relatively short service life - no more than 3 years . Characterized by high consumption and low penetration depth. Easily washed out with water, suitable for interior use only.
  2. Not saline. "Old-timer" of this market segment - applied since mid 80s last century, has not lost its relevance today. The composition includes organophosphorus components that are highly resistant to high temperatures.

    Such impregnations do not spoil the appearance of wood and can last up to 15 years , but their cost is significantly higher than that of salt analogues

First of all, these are proven over decades of use in the USSR/RF, but are still successfully used, including simply under other names:

  • The fire retardant composition for surface impregnation is “MS”, for deep impregnation – “MS 1:1”.
  • For surface – “PP”, as well as “VIM-1”, “BANN 1”.
  • The general composition of all is approximately the same - various salts, mostly “dual-use”, since their “main job” is mineral fertilizers + various industrial surfactants used for better adhesion/penetration into wood, as well as dyes.

A little later, during perestroika and after it, a huge number of new trains appeared. Not only industrial companies that traditionally produced paint and varnish products, but also companies that set the goal of becoming leaders in the new market of fire retardant materials began to engage in scientific development and implementation with lively advertising.

Thus, names appeared that were familiar to almost everyone who was involved in fire protection work. At least in your home/dacha for treatment, for example, a bathhouse, which was fashionable at one time; and many protective agents for this purpose successfully combined, at least at the level of advertising of finished products, not only the fight against fire, but also against mold, rot, aging/darkening, and insect pests of wood; improved, tinted, painted in colors that are pleasing to the tired eyes of the buyer/owner. Here are some of them:

  • "KSD";
  • "Attik";
  • "Pirilax";
  • "Old Elm";
  • "OZK-45D";
  • "Claude-01";
  • “Pyrex”, “Ograx” and dozens of other brands of fire retardant compounds, including varnishes, paints, coatings, enamels, it’s impossible to list everything, because as soon as they were not named by manufacturers, they often had a recipe that was not much different from the good old “MS” and "PP".

An interesting detail: developed for a huge country with its distances, compositions under the brand “made in the USSR” were produced in dry form in bags, anticipating the advertising slogan “just add water” by decades, but new ones mainly appeared in the form of aqueous solutions in plastic containers from 1 l. Why this was done - no explanation needed.

At one time, fire-retardant paint and varnish products even poured into the Russian market from abroad from the famous concerns of our sworn friends. But their happiness was short-lived, since the declared “fabulous” quality, in fact, was not much different from domestic goods, and the cost was too high for mass consumption, for example, in construction. Today their market share is completely negligible.

It should be noted that wood antiseptics and fire protection by themselves, as a rule, do not add. With the exception of recipes/mixtures of substances specially developed by chemical scientists, called fire-retardant compositions/coatings, which must be indicated both in the technical data for commercial products and in advertising materials about them.
