Siberian cedar or cedar pine is a powerful tree that has a trunk with a diameter of up to 1.8 meters and a height of up to 40 meters. The tree is up to 800 years old. The tree is widespread in Siberia and in certain areas of the European part of Russia.

Cedar wood has a yellow-white color, the core is yellow-pink. There is no clear transition of annual rings, resin passages are large. The quality of late wood is higher than that of early wood. The texture is smooth and soft.

What is cedar and where is cedar wood used?

Cedar is an evergreen coniferous pine tree. Cedar is a demanding tree and prefers to grow only in environmentally friendly and mostly warm places. However, it tolerates cold climates quite well, which is why cedar has taken root in Siberian forests, which do not have a warm climate. It practically does not take root in polluted regions. This is one of the most ancient trees in the World.

cedar forest

Cedar grows slowly; there are cedars whose age reaches 800 years. In diameter, the tree trunk can reach from 2 to 7 meters. This is the second largest tree in the world, after the American sequoia.

Cedar habitats can be classified as a slowly but endangered tree species. Currently, only 8 species of this tree remain. The reason for this is not only human activity, but also various natural processes. Cedars are grown in the territories of the South Caucasus, the Crimean Peninsula, some regions of the Black Sea, Central Asia, and were introduced and grown in some European countries. There are a lot of solitary cedars growing in the most unexpected places. Cedar can grow either in a cedar grove or alone in mixed habitats of trees. In addition to Siberian forests, cedar is found in the Moscow region, Leningrad region, Altai, Urals, Voronezh region of the Russian Federation.

In the old days, cedar was used to make dishes and containers for storing food. Such products lasted longer and, according to the beliefs of the taiga peoples, had a special taste and strength. Log houses made of cedar are a natural antiseptic and have a healing effect. Cedar wood is used in pencil production, making food containers, for flooring, furniture making, and interior decoration.

Are there any disadvantages

  • The main disadvantage of cedar trim is the cost. Prices start at approximately 3,000 rubles for a package of 10 lining boards or timber. You won't be able to find this material cheaper. Depending on the variety and processing, the amount can rise up to 12-15 thousand rubles per package.
  • The second disadvantage is the dishonesty of manufacturers. Often ordinary pine, larch or thuja are passed off as cedar. The buyer overpays for a product that does not correspond to what was declared and is actually cheaper. A similar problem occurs when the resin is not removed from the cedar lining, but is presented as an “estra” grade.

Types of cedar by grade

There are 7 main, most common types of cedar. There are also mixed species, subspecies of cedar trees, which are difficult to distinguish from pine or to give a definite answer whether it is cedar, pine or another coniferous pine tree.

Siberian cedar

Siberian cedar

There are mixed opinions about this type of cedar. There are claims that Siberian cedar is still a type of pine or cedar adapted over years of evolution to frosty climate conditions. That is why Siberian cedar is also called Siberian cedar pine.

Lebanese cedar

From the name it is clear that the birthplace of the tree is Lebanon. Also a frost-resistant evergreen tree. The tree trunk can reach 2-2.5 meters in diameter. Grows in Lebanon and on the Black Sea coast. The tree is so valuable to the Lebanese people that it is depicted on national symbols.

Lebanese cedar

Canadian cedar

It is distinguished by the softness of wood. The trunk width can reach 7 meters, height 75 meters. The oldest Canadian cedar grows in a US park, its age is 1200 years. Canadian cedar is also called red cedar; the wood texture has a beige-brown color. Cedar does not release resin and does not crack.

Canadian cedar

Deodar

Height up to 50 meters, width up to 3 meters. Maximum age from 1,000 to 3,000 years. grows in places of high humidity, frost-resistant.

deodar

Far Eastern cedar

It is characterized by increased frost resistance. Life expectancy is from 600 to 700 years. Mostly found in mixed forests with birch, oak, pine, and fir trees. Does not like high humidity, grows well in dry soil.

Far Eastern cedar

European cedar

This is not such a large variety of cedar in comparison with the previous ones. The height reaches up to 25 meters, the trunk diameter is up to 2 meters, and is characterized by increased density and hardness.

Korean cedar

Height is from 40 to 50 meters, trunk diameter is from 1 to 2 meters. The bark is very similar to pine, brown-red in color. The homeland of growth is North and South Korea, the South-Eastern part of Russia.

How to use it in a bath

Cedar trim in baths can be used in many ways:

wall covering;

flooring;

upholstery of seating areas and shelves;

decorative inserts on other types of finishes;

design of mirrors, dressing rooms, locker rooms;

laying on all elements and surfaces of the room.

In this case, the finishing can be done in one tone of wood or in several. The play of different varieties and colors looks beautiful when dark elements are implanted with a pattern inside light ones or vice versa. No less beautiful is the alternation of the direction of laying timber or lining horizontally and vertically, diagonally. Thus, you can create amazing drawings depending on your imagination.

Characteristics of cedar wood

The unique technical characteristics of cedar classify its wood as elite and expensive.

  • Density. The density of cedar wood is directly proportional to humidity. The higher the humidity of the growing conditions, the higher the density of the wood. The average density of dry cedar wood is 410 kg/m3. According to this characteristic, cedar is similar to larch wood.
  • Strength. Cedar wood is not particularly durable compared to other types of wood. At the same time, the wood is quite soft. Compression from 33 to 40.6 MPa. Bending - 54.1 to 79.9 MPa. Doesn't crack when dry.

  • Not afraid of humidity. Due to this property, cedar wood is used in places with high humidity.
  • Wood weight. The weight of a cube of cedar wood depends on the type of tree, the humidity level of the growing area, and can range from 360 to 570 kg/m3.
  • Chemical composition of cedar wood. Contains a large amount of phytoncides that can disinfect the air. 60% healthy oils. Does not accumulate chemicals and other harmful substances, decay products and radiation in its structure. As noted above, cedar is not able to grow in polluted and non-ecologically clean areas.
  • Wood color. The most common color is light brown with a yellow tint. Canadian cedar has a brown-red color.

    difference in texture and density of cedar and pine

  • High resistance to rotting processes and insects. Higher than spruce and fir. Resistance to rot and resistance to bugs is achieved due to the high content of resins in the wood.
  • Hardness. Cedar wood belongs to the category of soft wood species. Its hardness is 4 HB, while maintaining high strength characteristics. This property makes it easy to process and work with the material, to produce products that will be subject to large static loads.
  • Flammability. Like any lumber, cedar wood is not resistant to fire, but due to its increased resin content, it does not support fire well and smolders for a long time.
  • Thermal insulation and sound insulation. According to these characteristics, cedar is the leader among all wood species.

  • Environmental friendliness. Cedar wood is saturated with phytoncides and significantly purifies and disinfects the air in the room in which it is located. Cedar is a tree for healing; it purifies not only the air, but also everything around us - people, plants.
  • High cost of cedar lumber. Cedar is an elite wood due to its high-quality characteristics. And the cost of cedar materials will be more expensive compared to the cost of pine lumber.

Chemical composition

Cedar phytoncides disinfect the air, while its needles contain a lot of vitamin C and provitamin A. The cedar kernel contains 17% protein; 12% starch; 4% fiber; up to 20% carbohydrates; at least 60% oils. Wood contains organic acids, hydrocarbons, stilbenes, and flavonoids. In aromatherapy, cedar oils have a special place. Assessment of the chemical characteristics of wood 5.

Color and texture

All types of cedar wood are very similar in color. They have a light core with a brown or yellow tint. The wood has a pronounced cedar aroma and an oily surface. The contrast between the early and late zones is clearly visible.

The grain of cedar wood is medium in size. Middle-aged cedar has straight grain. Himalayan cedar has brown lines on a longitudinal section. The appearance of cedar wood has distinctive features that make it extremely interesting and beautiful.

Features of product production

As already mentioned, according to the masters, it is very easy to work with cedars of any variety. The undoubted advantages of such wood include the fact that it:

  • well planed and polished;
  • dries quickly and does not crack;
  • Excellent processing in all directions.

Also, such wood cuts well and does not wrinkle. The absence of wormholes is also considered an advantage of this material. Under varnish, cedar becomes very bright and attractive.
