Part 3. Alder: practicality, economy, benefit

Features of solid alder

Alder is a deciduous tree up to 20 meters high. It is represented by various subspecies, but in furniture production two are most often used - black and gray. The color range of black, despite the name, is quite diverse - from white to yellow-red tones. This variety is easy to process and is immune to unfavorable factors, in particular to the effects of pathogenic microflora and rotting. Black alder can be tinted and unusual decor can be cut from it. It belongs to soft rocks, lends itself well to carving, maintaining an even, smooth surface without burrs. It is durable and attractive, but is very susceptible to temperature changes and is susceptible to rotting. At the same time, it is resistant to mechanical damage.

Gray tolerates high humidity well, but is used much less frequently in the furniture industry. The reason is the curvature of the trunk, which rarely reaches the required height.

Main characteristics of the array:

  • When dried, it decreases slightly in size.
  • Uniform texture, practically without knots, with unpronounced capillaries and growth rings.
  • The density is uniform, 525 kg/m3, after drying - 595 kg/m3.
  • The long-fiber structure provides resistance to cracking and rotting.
  • In terms of density, it belongs to soft rocks.

Pros and cons of alder furniture

Some people believe that alder is not the best material for furniture production. Meanwhile, like any array, this is an environmentally friendly and safe raw material for those who care about their health.

The main advantage of alder furniture is its moisture resistance; it does not warp. That is why the array is suitable for traditionally complex rooms - bathrooms and kitchens. Thanks to its good viscosity, alder lends itself to various types of processing and does not break or crack when making complex decor, including bent ones. Therefore, furniture made from it is varied, and, if the craftsmen wish, it is unusual.

It perfectly imitates alder and more expensive types of wood, which is why it has earned the secret name “Russian mahogany”. Manufacturers coat furniture surfaces with varnishes, stains, and polishes that allow them to achieve a mirror shine and highlight the characteristics of the fibers. Staining helps to imitate the colors of noble species: ebony, walnut, cherry.

Characteristics in comparison with other tree species:

  • Strength and softness make alder similar to aspen and linden.
  • High resistance to deformation – at the level of coniferous species.
  • In wear resistance it is not inferior to birch.

Thanks to these features, solid alder furniture is popular in classic interiors of city apartments and country cottages.

Pros of furniture

Let us highlight the main positive characteristics of alder furniture:

  • Practicality, low hygroscopicity. Does not absorb foreign odors, therefore suitable for kitchen sets.
  • Thanks to “artificial aging” technologies, you can get a set or individual items that evoke associations with antiques.
  • Due to the softness of alder wood, complex decor and furniture of various shapes are made.
  • If any element is damaged, only that element can be replaced. Thanks to the uniformity of the texture, “getting into the tone” is not difficult.
  • The cost of alder is less than that of its main competitors: pine and birch. And the operational parameters are no worse.
  • It is possible to use any types of fasteners, including glue. However, when driving nails there is a risk of cracking, so it is better to replace them with screws.
  • When processing and painting, it is possible to imitate the texture and color of noble breeds. This allows you to make elite furniture from alder for luxurious interiors.

Cons of furniture

Solid wood sets are practical and attractive. But despite the advantages of wooden furniture, alder is not without some disadvantages. Firstly, during the processing process the wood is exposed to UV rays, which is why it loses its warm color and becomes similar to seasoned pine.

Other cons:

  • Even a master won’t undertake to drill a tree.
  • At high humidity, alder is negatively affected by metal even with short-term interaction. Spots appear on the wood and corrosion begins.
  • If furniture was ordered from unscrupulous manufacturers, there is a high risk of rotting. This indicates an initially poor quality finish.
  • Due to the insufficient elasticity of wood, it will most likely not be possible to implement a complex project with intricate decor.
  • Wood is quite demanding in terms of processing and requires careful, long-term sanding, otherwise it will begin to crack.
  • It is prone to fungal infections, so antiseptic treatment is necessary.

Alder or pine, which is better for furniture?

Pine and aspen are soft woods that are easy to process. When choosing materials for furniture, you need to pay attention to their differences. Alder is resistant to moisture and practically does not rot. However, it becomes covered with wormholes when dryness is high. Pine is durable, practical, and does not emit toxic substances into the atmosphere. Therefore, furniture made from it, like from alder, is suitable for children's rooms. Both arrays are susceptible to mechanical damage, so they must be handled with care. Both are afraid of temperature changes. Due to their softness and flexibility in processing, various forms of decor can be made from both types of solid wood. And dyeing will give them any shade.

However, when heated, pine begins to release resins that can burn you, so benches made from it cannot be used in baths. Alder does not have this drawback. When painting pine, it is quite difficult to achieve uniformity due to its porous structure, while solid alder is completely uniform and does not have pronounced vessels and growth rings. Therefore, if repairs are necessary, choosing an element for a bedside table is much easier than for a pine one.

In terms of price, the arrays belong to the same category.

Aspen

Published: March 12, 2015
Aspen is a soft hardwood. Aspen is a tree from the willow family, usually growing in forest and forest-steppe zones. It has a number of remarkable qualities: frost, moisture and acid resistance. Aspen wood is distinguished by its softness, uniform texture, whiteness and purity, and is less susceptible to wormholes than others. One of its important properties is light resistance. It does not turn yellow for a long time if it is in [...]

What types of furniture are made from alder

Alder furniture is varied. Connoisseurs of classic interiors buy beds with carved headboards, turning the bedroom into princely chambers. Kitchen sets with carved fronts are beautiful and practical. Sets for living rooms look elegant and aristocratic, especially if the alder is stylized as a noble, expensive tree.

Other uses of alder in the furniture industry:

  • Cabinets, cabinets and shelves for the bathroom. Wood is resistant to the negative effects of high humidity, and is more environmentally friendly than plastic and ceramics. Therefore, it successfully replaces them.
  • Benches, shelves in steam rooms and saunas. The wood does not heat up even at high temperatures.
  • Garden furniture for gazebos and country houses: tables, chairs, benches.
  • Original furniture for children: cabinets, chests of drawers, bedside tables painted in bright colors; unusual bed-cars or spaceships.
  • Walls, cabinets, shelves, consoles for the living room.
  • Stylish, ergonomic and inexpensive beds, as well as bedroom furniture.
  • Shoe racks, cabinets, banquettes, hallway cabinets.
  • Thanks to its warm tone, alder furniture is also suitable for office spaces.

To get an interesting interior, as if in a photo from a fashion magazine, when decorating a room with alder furniture, pay attention to the overall style. Wood is suitable for classic, country and Provence interiors. However, it will not look good in styles like hi-tech or modern. The furniture is uncomplicated and simple, so it is not suitable for luxurious, sophisticated design.

Let's look at what the most successful combination of colors will be when creating an interior with alder furniture. For the living room, the most successful combination would be a tandem with an olive or light green shade. The warm color of wood is combined with neutral pastel tones: peach, pink, blue, creating an interior in a calm spirit, for example, for a bedroom. The combination of alder shade with rich blue looks attractive.

When decorating a kitchen with alder furniture, neutral wallpaper in warm colors is suitable: cream, sand, beige, baked milk. The most important thing is that the owner likes the design and does not tire the eye.

The beauty of a warm shade is lost against the background of black, khaki, cold brown and lilac tones.

Do not confuse alder furniture with interior items made in alder color. In the latter case, we are talking about imitation of a natural warm shade. And even facades covered with PVC film can be in alder color. What color does this name have? This is a warm light brown tone, available in dark and light varieties.

Poplar

Alder furniture in different rooms

Alder is an environmentally friendly, safe raw material that will never cause allergies, so furniture made from it is suitable for children's rooms. Also, such beautiful natural furniture would be appropriate in other rooms:

  • hallway;
  • bedroom;
  • kitchen;
  • bathroom;
  • living room.

Alder wood is resistant to moisture and does not absorb odors, which is why dining sets and kitchen sets are made from it. The furniture will last quite a long time even with minimal care. Wood of dark and light colors is used for comfortable corner sofas in the kitchen. Alder is often combined with other natural materials; for example, in combination with oak it will fit perfectly into the concept of a rustic interior.

Bedroom furniture should be reliable, ergonomic and safe. Alder beds meet all these criteria. An additional plus is the low price compared to beech. A harmonious combination for the bedroom is white oak and alder, the warm shade of which will dilute the coolness of the oak.

Noble red-brown shades and sophisticated decor make alder furniture suitable for classic living rooms. The furniture is different: walls, cabinets, consoles, cabinets, chests of drawers, coffee tables. The texture of the wood is weak, so manufacturers paint it in golden, honey, yellow, and cherry tones.

Alder furniture is also appropriate for the hallway. Thanks to its warm color, it will bring a touch of coziness even to a small and dark room.

Alder furniture is suitable for summer cottages. But you can’t put it on the ground, especially with high soil moisture - there is a high risk of rotting. Therefore, garden furniture is placed in gazebos, terraces or placed on platforms.
