The advantage of sawing logs with a chainsaw
The method of cutting logs using a chainsaw has several advantages.
The ability to work under any conditions - the chainsaw is not afraid of humidity, so specialists can cut logs during the rain; in this case, the equipment will not deteriorate.
High productivity - it is allowed to carry out woodworking throughout the day, but it must be taken into account that the power of the device must be at least 7 horsepower.
Autonomous device - the equipment runs on gasoline and does not depend on electricity; the workplace can be mounted in any area where it will be more convenient to carry out the process.
Chainsaw components
Ease of use - the chainsaw is equipped with a soft start and adjustable chain rotation speed; these conditions ensure that beginners in this business obtain high-quality results.
The undoubted advantage is that the equipment costs much less than a small sawmill. During a breakdown, repairs are inexpensive and do not take much time.
Benefits of the DIY Process
If the household has a chainsaw, then with its help you can cut the logs with the highest quality. Moreover, working with this tool has a number of worthy qualities, which I discuss below:
- Maximum performance. That is, in a short period of time you can make several cubes of lumber.
- You can always use different attachments for fragmenting logs, depending on the required dimensions of the source material.
- Ease of use and no need for regular maintenance, such as in electric models.
- Safe operation in damp conditions, even with precipitation (however, this will not be very good for the log).
- Mobility. The device is not connected to an electrical outlet, so you can easily take it with you on the road and transport it in your hands.
It is also possible to use specialized attachments for chainsaws, which I will discuss below.

Types of working attachments
Sawing logs with a chainsaw is carried out in different ways; craftsmen work with wood along the grain, as well as across it. It all depends on what attachments are used in the chainsaw.
Attachment for longitudinal sawing
It is used for sawing logs lengthwise, the process takes place in a horizontal position. After work, the master receives the same thickness of the product. The finished materials undergo a drying process, after which the boards are used in construction.
In appearance, the device is a small frame; it is attached to the tire on each side.

Sawing with a lightweight attachment
The method is not very productive, but is used quite often. The element is fastened on one side, but the workpieces are slightly uneven. Such materials are necessary for the construction of sheds or fences.

Attachment for a chainsaw for removing bark
With the help of such an attachment it is easy to dissolve a log; it works due to a V-belt drive. Attached to belts on both sides, special pulleys are used for this. The speed of rotation of the shaft depends on the size of the pulleys, so the performance of the attachment is easy to change.
This technology forces the master to carefully monitor each stage of the process; some specialists use an assistant during this cutting. But this option requires increased security measures.
Setting up a sawmill
In order for work on the sawmill to be effective, it is necessary to regularly check and adjust all the important mechanisms of the equipment.
During operation, the following points must be monitored:
- Fabric tension. It is recommended to use the band saw for no more than 2 hours continuously. If it overheats, remove the fabric and leave to rest for 24 hours.
- Saw layout. To obtain a quality cut, you must constantly check this parameter. The optimal layout is considered to be when the ratio of sawdust and air between the log and the saw is 3:1.
- Speed of sawmill operation. If you cut logs at high speed, you will get a better cut, but at the same time the service life of the band saw will be reduced. It is best not to exceed 1/2 of the allowable value.
- To increase the service life of the band saw machine mechanisms, it is necessary to use band saw lubricant. The optimal composition includes lubricating oil for chainsaws and diesel fuel in a 1:1 ratio. The solution is applied in small quantities to both sides of the canvas.
After checking and adjusting the band saw mechanisms, they begin to prepare the wood.
Features of a homemade sawing option
It is easy to saw a log into boards using a homemade tool. Manufacturing the equipment is simple:
Diagram of a homemade sawing machine
- As a support, you need to use a frame from a school desk or a pipe with a cross-section in the form of a square, its optimal size is 20x20, more is allowed.
- Build two clamps, mount a cross member with two holes for tie bolts at one end, and make a protrusion in the middle for the tire.
- For longitudinal sawing of logs into boards, it is important to make a support frame; its width must be 7–8 cm less than the length.
- Then two elements 10 cm long are welded to both sides, holes are made for the bolts, and a handle is attached in the middle for ease of operation.
- After this, insert the clamps into the grooves, the tire is installed, and everything is carefully fixed.
Working with a homemade tool is not difficult; for this you will need two sawhorses, they will serve as a support, and you also need to prepare a metal strip or board, the element will be a guiding element. A log is placed underneath and the required height for work is adjusted.
Technique for sawing logs lengthwise
Longitudinal cutting is carried out using a horizontal attachment. In order to get even boards, it is important to use a specially prepared guide; its role is played by a metal lath or a high-strength board.
The difficult part in this process is making the first cut; for this you need:
Drawing of a board cut lengthwise
- Mount the leading ruler; it consists of two boards fastened together at an angle of 90 degrees.
- Place the log on the supports and secure its position firmly.
- Check if the log is level using a level.
- Using self-tapping screws, secure the guide ruler to the supports.
- Fix another guide in a horizontal position; the element will rest against the ground, but at the same time fix the log.
- Saw the log.
During the second cut, specialists may not use a leading ruler; the resulting board will serve as a guide. The second cut is made perpendicular to the first.
Secrets of cross cutting
A crosscut saw is used to produce firewood or decorative interior elements. Sawing is carried out according to the following principles:
Types of cuts
- Place the log in a horizontal position on wooden supports, the height should be 0.5 m.
- Clean it from the bark.
- Using an ax or saw, make small marks along the entire length; they should be located at the same distance from each other.
- Make a cut along the cuts.
Cross cutting does not require the use of special devices or attachments. An ordinary chain is perfect for such work, but its rings must be strong.

Circular saws for cross cutting
Circular saws for cross-cutting are divided into two subgroups. The first subgroup includes machines that cut boards into pieces. These are circular saw pendulum TsME-2, TsME-3, TsME-ZA; circular saws with linear movement of the caliper TsPA-2, TsPA-3, TsPA-40. Some enterprises use universal circular saws Ts5 and Ts6.
The second subgroup includes circular saws Ts2K12 and Ts2K20, as well as format-edging machines TsF-5, TsTZF-1 and TsF-2.
In Fig. 42 shows a general view of the cross-cutting circular saw hinged-pendulum machine. On the TsME-2 machine, the saw support is moved onto the material manually, and on the TsME-3 machine - with a pneumatic hydraulic cylinder. The TsME-ZA machine is equipped with front-of-the-machine non-drive and behind-the-machine driven roller conveyors for moving sawn materials.

Circular saws with linear movement of the caliper TsPA-2, TsPA-3 and TsPA-40 (Fig. 43) operate from their own hydraulic pump and are designed for transverse cutting of lumber, panels and trimming of parts.
Circular saw finishing machines (Fig. 44) Ts2K12-1 and Ts2K20-1 are designed for precise trimming of boards, bars and panels simultaneously on both sides; The same machines with additional milling heads (Ts2K12F-1 and Ts2K20F-1) make it possible to select a profile on the edges of panel parts.
Format machines are used for cutting carpentry, chipboard, fiber boards and
plywood, as well as for filing around the perimeter of panel blanks. On formatting machines of modern designs, not only circular saws are provided, but also cutters to simultaneously obtain precise dimensions and a given profile.
The single-saw format machine TsF-5 consists of a saw support, a bed with guides along which the carriage moves. The carriage is equipped with stops for placing workpieces in the desired position, as well as special clamps for securing them. The carriage with the workpiece is moved onto the saw manually or using a separate drive. In addition to cutting slab materials, these machines can be used to cut panels around the perimeter, but for this you need to make four passes.
Format machines TsF-2 (Fig. 45) make it possible to file two parallel sides in one pass. In addition to two saw supports, the machine can be equipped with two milling heads for milling edges according to the desired profile. Feeding is carried out by a chain conveyor having tracked clamping devices with support rollers.
On a three-saw format-edging machine TsTZF-1 (Fig. 46), slabs are cut into specified formats (dimensions) without changing the position of the slab relative to the feeders.
Multi-saw format-cutting machine TsTMF-1 with program control is used for rough cutting
packages of chipboard, wood fiber or wood boards for blanks of panel furniture parts. The diagram of the TsTMF machine is shown in Fig. 47.

Safety precautions
When working with a chainsaw, you must follow safety rules; they will help you avoid injuries and unpleasant situations:
- People, especially children, should not be allowed onto the work site.
- When working with a circular saw, be sure to wear a special protective cover on it.
- During the process of sawing logs, you should use protective equipment against sawdust and noise.
- It is necessary to have a first aid kit with medications to treat the wound during cuts.
- Do not pour gasoline into a heated tank of a chainsaw.
- The chainsaw must be used only for its intended purpose; it is prohibited to turn it on at full power if it is not in use.
- Installation of logs is carried out only on the right side.
- When working with equipment, it is strictly forbidden to press it with force.
If you follow safety precautions, the work will not be difficult, and the result will be high-quality material without harm to health.
A chainsaw is a versatile piece of equipment that is easy to use. Craftsmen can use it on a personal plot, in a private house. In addition to producing boards, it is used for repair work on outbuildings and wooden decorative elements. You don’t need a large number of boards; just take a couple of logs.
Features of a chainsaw sawmill
There are many types of sawmills on the market, but they are all based on a chainsaw. The chain for a chainsaw in this case can be of the band or chain type, depending on the tasks that need to be performed.
- The first is chain equipment. It is excellent for working with round workpieces, and a saw chain is used as a working element. After the operation of such an element, a large amount of sawdust always remains. This is precisely the most significant disadvantage of this design.
- The second option is a sawmill based on a band saw, which is excellent for working with fairly large logs. The chainsaw chain here is of the appropriate type. Among the shortcomings, sawdust is also noted, but the fact is that there are not too many of them, but they scatter over a fairly large distance. For this reason, this type of unit is usually used together with a chip deflector, to which it is additionally recommended to connect a flexible air duct.
Log cutting methods
Before sawing an entire forest, longitudinal cuts are made along the sides of the log, rarely from absolutely all edges. The released material is used to make double-edged timber, as well as unedged planks.
By changing the direction of the saw in relation to the annual rings in the log, it is possible to purchase timber with a unique pattern.
The properties of such planks will vary. This period is provided for when combining a log cutting scheme.
There are some types of sawing:
- Radial. Sawing is done vertically to the pattern of the rings. The section is valued because it produces a board with a uniform structure, as well as a color palette. It is highly resistant to moisture and shrinkage. This kind of material is high quality.
- Accelerator. Sawing of the log is carried out in parallel, or along the tangent line of relatively annual rings. The boards you buy are of low quality, but they have fascinating images. The materials are susceptible to high moisture and are recommended for use in dry conditions.
- Rustic. The section is made at different angles transversely to the log. The plank includes various imperfections in the form of knots and sapwood. It shows mediocre signs of shrinkage and swelling from moisture.
- Diametrical. The section is made in the middle of the log across the grain. The board has an image of a cross-section of annual rings. It stands out for its low quality.
In order to purchase the maximum number of materials at the lowest cost, it is possible to use special projects, or a drawing of a log cut in a band saw.
