Room design under stone and wood: advantages and disadvantages

Let's consider the advantages of each material. The stone creates sound and heat insulation in a room, looks great due to its variety of shapes and retains its impeccable external qualities for a long time. Wood also holds heat well, does not emit harmful substances and has a pleasant smell.

And now about the advantages of wood and stone interiors:

  • Versatility. Natural materials will fit into any style: in some places they will become a basic element, and in others they will become an accent;
  • Environmentally friendly. Wood and stone parts are completely non-toxic;
  • Uniqueness. Each element has its own structure, pattern, texture, so even standard designs turn out different.

There is only one drawback - the relatively high cost of natural materials. However, you can always use small things at hand and imitation of natural gifts in decoration.

Wood and stone design for different rooms

The materials are so versatile that they can decorate any room. If you decide to use this combination, study the designers’ recommendations for the proper design of rooms.

Hallway

Parquet and wooden furniture are universal solutions for the hallway. The walls can be decorated with stonework or used brick for decoration. Paintings or bookshelves can serve as an accent.

Advice! Do not overuse dark shades - they will visually make the room smaller and make it gloomy.

Living room

You can use stone in different ways in the wooden interior of the living room. For example, decorate the ceiling with massive beams and the walls with stone slabs. The more prominent the elements are, the more interesting the design will be.

If the room is decorated in a modern style, for example, loft or fusion, you can include individual details made from natural materials in the decor. Minimalistic wooden compositions, stone animal heads, and masonry on the walls look good. Do you like functional decor? Kitchen

There are many options for finishing a wooden house, but the most popular option for kitchens is stonework combined with wall panels in a natural shade. The apron above the work surface can be decorated with tiles, and the floor with porcelain stoneware.

Bathroom

It is better to be more careful with wood in the bathroom - despite good processing, the material is not resistant to high humidity. But the walls covered with slabs look luxurious and solid. Another decorative option is stone chips. Combined with an acrylic bathtub, this design looks amazing!

Bedroom

You can decorate three walls in the room with wood, and decorate the fourth, opposite the bed, with stone. If you have a room in a classic style, an option with stone arched openings and columns is suitable.

Idea! If there is a niche in the wall, you can make a frame for it from wooden frames, and decorate the interior space with small artificial stones of different sizes. Small lamps or LED strips mounted around the perimeter of the recess are suitable as a functional addition.

Children's

In a child’s room, you can highlight the floor in the play area with colored stone tiles, and decorate the walls with wide panels. The result is a beautiful and practical interior that will appeal to children of any age. Wooden furniture will be a good addition to this design solution.

Two living rooms - two atmospheres

Look at two living rooms in one country house. The first, front door, is located on the first floor. The second, chamber, is on the second floor. In the first, the mood of pomp is emphasized by the abundance of stone - onyx and rare varieties of marble, slabs and tiles.

And in the second, the mood is set by the tree. Metal is also used in different ways: if in the first space there is a brutal metal fireplace, then in the second there are neat coffee tables.

Interior styles that “love” wood and stone

Classic

The classic style is ideal for wood and stone designs. Parquet floors, wide beams, wooden furniture and a luxurious fireplace with a stone frame are frequent guests in a luxurious interior. Materials of different textures and deep natural colors are welcome.

Rustic

One of the most interesting styles involves the predominance of wooden decor. The stone can be used as an interesting detail. For example, decorate them with a fireplace or lay out a real Russian stove. The photo shows an example of a successful ensemble of materials.

Playing with surfaces

Brushed wood for the floor and milled wood for the walls is what attracts attention in this space. The furniture was chosen so that it would not overload it and would not distract from the beauty of the wooden surfaces, for example, a leather sofa and a table on metal supports, as well as metal lamps and chairs on metal “hooves.” The tabletop is made of porcelain stoneware.

Finish options for wood decoration

If you want dramatic changes in design, use wood rather than wallpaper to decorate your walls. It is not necessary to buy expensive materials - future design elements may well be at hand.

Wooden walls

You can finish the surfaces with clapboard, laminate, parquet boards, particle boards, saw cuts, and veneer panels. The wall does not have to be smooth - a slight relief will add creativity to the interior. A bold option is decor from the ends of the saw cuts. Strongly protruding elements are convenient to use as shelves for small items.

Wood slats

If you decorate one wall and ceiling with thin slats, you will get a memorable stylish design. Decorative strips should be used in doses - an excess of elements will block the overall stylistic ensemble.

Idea! From slats you can create sliding partitions for zoning. They will turn out to be light, weightless and very elegant.

Partitions

Partitions are a great tool for zoning rooms. Many are accustomed to structures made of plasterboard, but wood products look no less organic. You can buy or build yourself vertical or horizontal partitions from lining, processed trunks, slats and branches.

Barn boards in the interior

Barn boards are elements of wooden buildings: houses, sheds, outbuildings. Such details are of particular value because it is easy to create unique design compositions from them.

To use boards, you must first treat them with special compounds against insects and fungus. There is no need to remove nail marks and scuff marks - they will add a special charm to the decor.

Using the material you can lay out the flooring or decorate the walls. For these purposes, it is better to take pine, eucalyptus and oak boards. They have stunning patterns, good durability and interesting textures.

Can be used in decoration to imitate old boards. The products look no different from barn elements and have similar qualities. They are ideal for making wooden partitions.

Idea! Barn boards make excellent designer furniture. You can buy ready-made models or create simple tables, chairs, and bedside tables yourself.

Internal treatment of a wooden house with antiseptics and fire retardants

Protecting wood finishes with various means significantly extends their service life. Without the use of such preparations, the environment will have an extremely negative impact on the parts of a wooden structure. Mold, fungi, and various pests will render finishing elements unusable.

A wide range of antiseptic preparations allows you to choose the most convenient for use and suitable for a particular type of breed. Depending on the composition of the impregnation, they can be organic, oil-based, water-soluble, or combined. For application use a brush, spray or roller.

It is also necessary to treat the wood inside the house with fire retardants, since the material is flammable. Fire resistance can be increased by introducing a special chemical into wood elements. According to the principle of action, fire retardants are divided into two types. The first increases the ignition temperature of wood, and the second prevents the spread of fire over the entire surface.

Compositions from saw cuts for room decor

You can use wood as an original accent for any room by placing objects made from wood cuts in the rooms. For example:

  • Stylish watch;
  • Placemats;
  • Vases;
  • Shelves;
  • Panel;
  • Frames for pictures and mirrors.

Making such decorations is not difficult - it’s just a matter of imagination and the availability of materials. We offer videos as a source of inspiration and ideas.

If you decide to create your own decor, do not forget about proper surface treatment. Be sure to coat each element with a protective agent or varnish. It is undesirable to use paints - they can disrupt the texture of the material.

You can stick thin saw cuts on the walls, having previously prepared the surface. A nuance - it is better to take elements of different sizes, but approximately the same thickness. If any detail stands out too much, the stylistic picture will be disrupted.

What’s attractive about this work is how elegantly the theme of metal is played out: the legs of the dining chairs are edged with metal to match the chandelier. And in the bedroom there are thin strips of brass on the wall, like rays, which greatly decorates the interior.

Stone in the interior: types and features

For decoration, you can use both natural and artificial materials, which are absolutely not inferior in external qualities. Let's tell you more about the most popular stone options for design.

Artificial

Due to its low weight, such a stone is easier to fix on the surface than a real one. It also has a rich color palette, so you can easily choose the right shade for your design. Artificial stone and wood in the interior look very natural and luxurious, fit into different styles and complement interior compositions.

Plaster

This stone is made from a durable, safe mineral. It looks great as a decoration for any room. The gypsum material is easy to work with: no additional sanding or tedious cleaning is required. After manipulating such a stone, there will be almost no dust left in the room.

Acrylic

This is a material made from acrylic resin, mineral particles and special dyes. Thanks to its non-porous structure, it has high strength and durability. Suitable for making stairs, furniture and finishing elements for bathrooms.

Quartz

Quartz stone is suitable for finishing and production of interior items. It is often used to make steps for stairs, window sills, countertops, bar counters, and floor coverings. The material needs careful processing, but it looks excellent as decor.

Natural

This is an expensive, refined material, an invariable attribute of luxurious interiors. For finishing walls and floors, the following are most often used: onyx, marble, decorative slate, agate. You can make a kitchen apron, bar counter or island, or cut for a fireplace portal from natural stone.

Stone decor options

Stone in the interior of a wooden house is widely used for wall decoration. It can be either an auxiliary or an independent decorative element. Let's consider the methods that characterize the second option.

Stone slabs

Stone slabs deserve a place in your design project. They are suitable for decorating walls and floors in any room of the house. This is a practical material that looks expensive, does not require careful maintenance, and is resistant to changes in humidity and temperature. In the photo you can see how the slabs transform the interior.

Masonry

The purpose of the decor is to fix the stones on the wall using adhesive. When laying out elements, it is important to maintain a certain order so that there are no large gaps between the parts. If the room has high humidity, it is better to use natural stone, because gypsum and concrete modifications quickly lose their external properties in such conditions.

Step-by-step installation instructions

  1. Preparation stage: after inspecting the wall and making sure that it is smooth and clean, secure the mesh with dowels and level it with a special solution. If the wall turns out to be unprepared during inspection, then it needs to be leveled, the cracks covered, and the decorative coating removed.
  2. Installation of support: a special support is created for laying the first rows. For support, a metal corner is usually used, which is securely fixed.
  3. Primer is applied: the primer is placed on the dried mortar. The soil will improve adhesion between the surface and the facing material.
  4. Preparing the adhesive mixture: you will need glue intended only for stone elements. For interior decoration, it is recommended to use glue with an elastic structure, frost and moisture protection.
  5. Applying glue: applied only to the part of the wall where the cladding will be placed. There is no point in applying glue to the entire wall, as it will dry out, which will reduce the level of adhesion. It is best to work with a trowel or spatula, carefully rubbing the composition into the wall. The glue is also applied to the facing material itself, spreading it over the back side.
  6. Laying on the wall: the mortar is pressed in with strong pressure and tapped on the stone with a rubber hammer. This is necessary to remove excess protruding glue.
  7. A building level is required for horizontal and vertical alignment. To ensure that the fragments are evenly distributed on the plane, after laying they are checked with a level. Correction of the location is carried out until the glue has dried.
  8. Grouting: Use a syringe or a nail gun to fill gaps. The mixture is pressed in with gentle movements and smoothed out, but only when it grips the surface.
  9. Final processing: removes contaminants that were introduced during installation - excess glue, mortar and grout residues. For this, natural cleaners are used that will not destroy the texture, color and properties of the material.

By giving preference to artificial or natural material, the designer will receive a coating that will not change its original characteristics over a long period. The material is environmentally friendly, as natural ingredients are used in its production. Popular types of stone are gypsum, acrylic, quartz.

The advantages of decorative stone include its moisture resistance, ease of use, accessibility, and environmental friendliness.

Do-it-yourself interior decoration with wood and stone

If you have a ready-made design project, you can turn it into reality yourself. The key to success: high-quality materials and proper surface preparation. You can repeat interesting ideas and save on the services of a professional.

Design options

The simplest and most modern interiors are made of stone and wood - with walls covered with one of these materials. We invite you to look at the photo. In this version, stone was used as a key element. It’s not difficult to do something similar in your home even without special skills.

Materials for creating decor

To prepare the wall you will need a plaster solution. If the surface is perfectly flat, you can immediately begin finishing.

What you will need:

  • Primer;
  • Adhesive composition;
  • Putty knife;
  • Gypsum stone.

Before starting work, you need to treat the wall with a primer or install a special mesh. This will significantly increase the strength of the plaster layer, which means the stone will adhere well to the surface.

Masonry technology

It's simple - you need to apply a thin layer of adhesive to the surface of the wall or stone, then press the element tightly to the selected plane. It is better to start from the corners and work from the bottom up.

The optimal distance between stones is no more than 8 mm. The larger the elements, the wider the seam should be. To treat gaps you need to use gypsum putty. It is convenient to apply it with a spatula or a large syringe.

The modern interior “wood and stone” will become your source of comfort and inspiration. Transform your home with natural materials and watch the magical play of design elements.

How to lay it down?

  1. Before laying the stone on the tree, a waterproofing material is installed - roofing felt or other moisture-proof building material.
    Attention

    The waterproofing material will protect the wood from rotting and preserve the glue. The layers are laid in horizontal rows, and the last one is overlapped by four centimeters, at vertical seams - up to eight centimeters. This all applies to the installation of waterproofing.

  2. Then, using galvanized nails or staples, the plaster mesh is attached to the surface with an anti-corrosion protective layer. About 10–15 centimeters remain between the fastenings vertically, and horizontally – 35–40 centimeters. The mesh is laid in two layers.
  3. Plaster is applied on top in a one-centimeter layer. Allow the plaster to dry thoroughly before laying.
