A new wooden house always had a delightful aroma of fresh wood and resin. But it became truly lived-in and family-friendly after a few years, when the room acquired its own special smell, the wood was painted several times, and had chips and cracks. Returning to such a house, the individual was always immersed in pleasant memories filled with the smell of pies, warmth and comfort. Even the creaking of the floorboards is pleasant to the ear.

It is always sad to demolish the houses of grandparents, since modern plastic, glass, metal, concrete can never replace wood. Modern glamor is undoubtedly beautiful and luxurious, but emotionally empty. Therefore, at the end of the 20th century, eco-style and vintage became popular.

Thanks to the presence of this material, the “soul”, the harmonious existence of man and nature, began to appear in the modern interior.

Most people, having built their house from scratch, try to make it a family nest, where everything is individual and unique.

Looking at a wall made from old boards, questions involuntarily arise about their past life, where the cracks appeared on them. Maybe they were dried out by the sun or cracked by sea water, or maybe. They were simply attacked by a common bark beetle. There are no answers to all these questions, all that remains is to fantasize. New owners always try to treat them more carefully than in their previous life.

Restoration compounds for treating damaged wood

Wood restoration compounds can be called the most effective for restoring an old wooden surface.

When treated with restoration compounds, the structure of the wood remains visible. But at the same time, such products allow you to qualitatively paint over various surface darkening on the wood.

The color range on the market is very extensive. And you can choose a shade to suit any surface

Restoration compounds qualitatively strengthen the top layer of wood and make it more durable. In addition, using the restoration composition, there is no need to further treat the wood with antiseptics

Processing with the compounds takes little time and gives a very good result.

Let's now talk about the disadvantages of restoration compounds for wood.

The cost of special products for restoring damaged wooden surfaces is not exactly budget-friendly; they are relatively expensive

Before applying the restoration composition, mandatory grinding of the surface is necessary. This way the composition penetrates better and adheres to the surface.

Application options

Old boards are very relevant for creating interiors for modern designers. There are a lot of application options:

  • Decorating an entire wall.
  • Decorating part of the wall as a bright accent or functional area.

Both of the above options combine 2 functions: they are a finishing element and fully replace finishing materials such as wallpaper, plaster, paint. But for everything to work out organically, you need to very carefully select a combination of tones and shades.

Garden swing

The frame of the swing is either made of wood, I made it from metal. But the seat definitely needs to be made of boards, and then it can be painted or upholstered with something soft. The length of the boards and the method of fastening are determined in advance - on corners or framed. And it is also important to think about what the swing will hang on. I got metal chains for this. And my friends didn’t bother with the frame of the swing at all, but simply made a seat and hung it directly on the branch of a large tree near the house.

Subtleties and recommendations for design

Although old wood is very valuable, not every tree is valuable. It is not enough to tear down a long-built fence in a country house and sell the material as unique.

Basic recommendations

  1. Old boards in the interior are good, but in reasonable quantities. Finishes or objects should not attract unnecessary attention. Wood should not be conspicuous; it is necessary to create a certain style, organically fitting into it. When designing, you need to pay special attention to the thickness, size, shade, and possible pattern of the working material.
  2. Experienced designers do not recommend decorating the entire perimeter of the room with wood. It is better to choose 1-2 large elements, then complement the finished interior with accessories. This could be the frame of a massive mirror, a wardrobe, a table, or a headboard. If you overdo it, then when examining the room you will get the impression of a cluttered corner.
  3. To prevent the design from becoming too gloomy, during the renovation process you can use good textiles and some modern finishing materials.
  4. A brick wall will look great against the background of antique surfaces.

These are the basic recommendations; you don’t have to follow them all at once; a balance is needed, which manifests itself in the process of working on the style.

Benches

Speaking of benches, this is the most necessary thing in a summer cottage, to rest after gardening work. You can either dig a bench in the garden or make it built-in on the terrace. It is better to make it from scraps of timber; the composite is not afraid of weather conditions. And if you do it under a canopy, then I also used ordinary boards. Usually two or three boards are placed on the bench frame. I will give you this advice - to prevent the boards from bending, you need to make the distance between the logs no more than 30 cm.

Each room has its own board

Room Recommendations
Living room This is exactly the room where a whole wall made of old boards would fit perfectly. Its understated beauty, worn and cracked, will be a great addition to modern furniture and accessories. You can also make the floor out of wood and decorate it with a Persian rug. Every living room should have a large mirror. It is ideally complemented by a massive frame made of aged material.
Bedroom When decorating a bedroom, everything is much simpler. You can make the headboard of the bed, the dressing table “old,” and place several decorative beams on the walls or ceiling. If you don’t skimp on lighting fixtures, buy good ceiling lamps; their light will highlight all the scuffs and cracks.
Kitchen Traditionally, cabinet fronts, chairs, and stools are made from aged specimens.
Cabinet A place where a board in the interior will only inspire, put the owner in a working mood, and in the evening relax, immerse in an atmosphere of reflection.

Sanding wood as a method of renewing it

Sanding is a universal method of eliminating damage on various surfaces, including wood. Sanding eliminates damage to surfaces by mechanically removing the damaged layer.

The following wood damage can be eliminated by sanding:

  • biodefeats
  • darkening
  • shallow chips
  • small cracks

The sanding method is a very effective way to renew damaged wood. But, like any method, grinding has its drawbacks:

  • The surface renewal effect is short-lived
  • You can use wood sanding to renew the surface a couple of times. Further, the tree will become thinner, which will lead to its complete destruction
  • Sanding is a long and labor-intensive process that requires considerable effort.
  • After grinding, surface treatment with protective compounds is necessary.

Restoration of old trees

Most modern gardeners are responsible for their green departments and take care of the garden in a timely manner, preventing the deplorable condition of the trees. However, it also happens that the newly acquired plot already has an orchard and it is not in the best condition. This means that you need to master the skills of tree rejuvenation.

It is always a good idea to start with garden cleaning and minimal sanitation. Regardless of the season, remove root shoots, weed, loosen and mulch trunks, clean trunks and branches of moss and lichen, carry out seasonal feeding and treatment against pests and diseases. As a rule, trees in an old orchard have a lot of problems, and this may be the reason for the decrease in fruiting.

If the actions taken in the first year do not help, move on to more radical actions.

Restoration of the facade of wooden houses. Detailed description of work stages

Bagretsov Alexey Vladimirovich project manager Moscow

Wood is one of the most popular cladding options, which is used both for cladding luxury cottages and for finishing small private houses.

Wood looks beautiful, warms well and harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding landscape. To maintain its beauty and performance properties, wood panels need to be maintained regularly.

If you bought or inherited a house with wooden cladding, which no one has taken care of for a long time, you will have to do a comprehensive restoration of the facade of the house. Restoration work helps restore wood siding to its beautiful new look and extend the life of natural materials.

What will you learn about in the article?

  1. Technology for restoration of wooden facades
  2. Why is it worth restoring wood siding?
  3. How to properly remove old coating
  4. Applying primer and painting
  5. Cost and expenses

Technology for restoration of wooden facades

Restoration work is carried out in several stages. First of all, it is necessary to conduct a full inspection of the facade to identify all areas of damage. Panels that cannot be repaired must be replaced with new ones. If no one has looked after the facade for a long time, there will definitely be areas of rot, mold and fungal damage on the panels. Before restoring the facade of the house, they must be removed.

Photo 1. House before restoration by our specialists

Simply masking the damaged areas with a layer of paint will not stop the process of rotting or mold. The wood will continue to deteriorate and as a result you will have to replace a much larger area of cladding. That is why wood unsuitable for repair must be disposed of immediately. And only after this can you begin to restore the shade of the wood and apply paint and varnish material.

Photo 2. House after restoration by our specialists

If (in the case of timber or logs) it is impossible to remove boards with mold, then it is necessary to kill the mold with a special bleach. Just an antiseptic will not help here, because an antiseptic is prevention, not treatment.

Why is it worth restoring wood siding?

Usually the facade is perceived only as a decorative part of the house. Of course, beautiful decoration ennobles the building and gives it a complete look. However, this is not its only function.

Photo 3. Sanding the old facade, removing old paint

High-quality cladding reliably protects the building structure from aggressive environmental influences and damage. Wooden panels are often used to install a ventilated façade. In this case, the finishing hides the insulation. Slab thermal insulation is installed in the sheathing, secured with a counter-latten and covered with decorative wood panels.

Photo 4. Painted plank on the facade of the house

Even if the facade of the house does not look very promising, it is worth trying to repair it. In most cases, restoration can still be done. It is worth considering that installing a new building façade will in any case cost much more.

Stages of restoration of wooden facades

  • Inspection of the facade to identify damaged areas and assess the scope of restoration measures. Only after a comprehensive analysis of the condition of the facade can an estimate be calculated.
  • Grinding. This stage of wall repair is necessary to remove old paint and varnish and level the surface of the wood. It is performed in two stages. First with a grinder with a large grain, and then with an eccentric with a finer one.
  • Applying primer. For outdoor work, it is worth using products with additional protective and antiseptic properties. Such primers will much more effectively protect wooden panels from constant fluctuations in humidity, temperature changes, ultraviolet radiation and various biological damage.
  • Coloring. Wood can be painted with varnishes, oils and paints. If you want to highlight the beauty of natural wood patterns and textures, you can choose transparent or translucent paintwork.

How to properly remove old coating

To remove paint from the surface of a wooden facade, you can use a regular grinder. This tool will help you quickly cope with even a large area of work, and it is very convenient to work with. To remove old paint and varnish material, use 80 grit abrasive.

Photo 5. Eccentric sander

You need to remove the coating layer very carefully. Careless movements will not only provide you with more dust, but will also leave deep dents on the surface that will be very difficult to fix.

Photo 6. Grinder for removing old paint

But even with the most careful work, after sanding the surface will not be perfectly smooth, so it will need to be sanded additionally. To do this, you should use an eccentric sander with 150 abrasive.

Why you should use wheels with different grits:

  1. Abrasive 80 effectively removes paint and varnish residues and deeply opens the pores of wood. Thanks to this “aggressive” treatment, the primer, which will be applied subsequently, penetrates much better into the thickness of the wood.
  2. Abrasive 150 corrects all surface irregularities and roughness that appeared after the previous processing stage. After repeated sanding with a finer abrasive, the paintwork material will lay down in a uniform, beautiful layer.

If only 150-grit abrasive can be used for sanding wooden panels that will be installed inside the house, then both stages of sanding must be performed for the facade. A tree that is constantly outdoors is much more susceptible to aggressive environmental influences, so it needs better and more effective protection. That is why the degree of adhesion and penetration depth of protective impregnation so significantly affects the performance properties and durability of a wooden facade.

Photo 7. Work on sanding and painting the facade

Grinding with an angle grinder always copes with old paintwork, but this cannot be said about grayed areas of wood. You can remove small stains with a grinder, but the layer of grayed wood can reach more than 5 mm, so you won’t be able to simply remove it.

Photo 8. Facade after restoration

In such cases, a special gel for removing gray areas from a wood surface, Holz-Entgrauer Power-Gel, is used for restoration. The product effectively removes gray areas, returning the wood to its natural color. Thanks to its high-quality composition, the gel acts very carefully and does not damage the texture of wood fibers.

Photo 9. Means for removing gray plaque on wood

The composition is applied in several stages:

  • The wooden surface is cleaned of dirt and moistened with water.
  • For ease of use, it is worth pouring part of the gel into a plastic container.
  • The product should be applied along the fibers with a stiff brush.
  • After application, the gel should be left on the surface for 15-20 minutes.
  • The composition should be washed off with plenty of water, after rubbing with a brush.
  • If necessary, the process can be repeated.

Are you planning to paint the facade with transparent or translucent compounds? This means that it must be pre-treated with a whitening gel. Otherwise, gray areas will be visible on the surface. Cover paint will hide the gray areas.

Applying primer and painting

After the wood has been pre-sanded, the primer can be applied. To treat the facade, it is best to use products with antiseptic properties. Such compositions will not only improve the adhesion of the paint and varnish material, but will also increase the wood’s resistance to rot, fungal and mold infections, and the action of harmful insects.

Photo 10. Painting the facade and warm seam

To paint a wooden facade, you can use varnishes, oils and paints. If you want to preserve the wood grain, you should use transparent or translucent compounds.
