How to weld a swing from pipes with your own hands: drawings with dimensions + master class

On the page you can download a swing drawing with dimensions in PDF and Solidworks format. I drew two versions of the same swing. One option is a drawing of a solid metal swing, if you dig it into the ground. The second option is a drawing of a swing made of collapsible metal; in this option, pipes with embedded parts are dug in. And the swing can be disassembled and taken away, for example, if it is at the dacha.

Pros and cons of swings made from profile pipes

The positive features of an entertainment complex made from a profile metal pipe can be listed for a long time. The main advantages are:

  1. Typically, the support of the swing is a stable jamb consisting of four profile steel pipes. The design can withstand weights of up to 280 kg or more. The parameter depends on the cross-section of the profile metal pipes used.
  2. The large weight of the structure can be considered an advantage. The swing is more stable during use. They will withstand a strong hurricane. The profile structure is not deformed by an avalanche falling from the roof.
  3. The outdoor swing, assembled with your own hands from a profile pipe, has a neat appearance. By adding forging elements, the entertainment complex will become part of the decoration of the yard landscape.
  4. An excellent indicator of metal is its resistance to all natural phenomena. The swing stands all year round in rain, snow, sun, hail and nothing happens to it.

The main disadvantage is the difficulty of making it yourself. To assemble a profile swing you will need welding experience and a welding machine. Sometimes the structure is made collapsible with a bolted connection. However, some components still require welding.

In addition to the advantages, heavy weight can be considered a disadvantage. A heavy swing is difficult to move to another place. Such metal play complexes are usually made by hand and are of a stationary type.

Manufacturing of backrest, seat and armrests

For the seat and backrest, beams 1500 mm long (section 40x60 mm) are used. The indicated dimensions are not dogmatic; it is important that the beam or board, without bending, holds the sitting people.

Rice. 3. Attaching long bars to support elements

The beams are fastened to the supports using self-tapping screws. There is no need to lay the bars closely; the presence of gaps will have a beneficial effect on the speed at which the swing dries out after rain and will reduce the weight of the structure. The recommended gap is from 15 to 20 mm, for the back it can be increased to the width of one block.

Rice. 4. Assembled bench for swing (without armrests)

How to make a hole in a block so that a crack does not appear? Very simple: first use a drill, then screw in the screw. The diameter of the hole made with a drill must be smaller than the size of the self-tapping screw. When making the top crossbar of the backrest, you can show your individuality: give it a smooth bend, add some decorative element, etc.

Rice. 5. Installed armrests

The presence of armrests significantly increases the comfort of rest. They are made from the same bars with a half-wood connection and subsequent rigid fastening to the load-bearing elements of the bench.

The final step in making the bench is to screw M 10 bolts into the external load-bearing elements (on top of the back and at the beginning of the horizontal part). A wide washer is used on the outside; the inside of the bench is reinforced with a steel plate. Once the installation is complete, the swing chains will be pulled here.

Varieties of garden swings made of pipes

Self-made structures made from profiled metal pipes differ in appearance. Often in areas there are real masterpieces with curlicues, armrests, footrests and other elements. However, design is not the main variety. The main difference is the swing frame made of pipes, which comes in two types:

  1. Welded swings are more difficult to make with your own hands if you do not have a welding machine and experience. This design cannot be disassembled if necessary, for example, for storage. However, welded swings have a big advantage. It lies in the strength of the connection of the profile metal pipe. The frame will never loosen and will withstand heavy loads.

  2. It is easier to assemble a dismountable swing from pipes without welding. All connections are made with bolts. However, assembly completely without welding is a controversial issue. Some complex components require a welding process. This includes the manufacture of a seat, the fixation of forged decoration elements, and flanges for bolted connections. If necessary, the collapsible profile structure is laid out into separate elements and sent to be stored in a barn. This is the main advantage. An important disadvantage is the reduced strength. The bolted connection becomes loose over time and play appears. The threads rust in the rain. If the nuts cannot be unscrewed from the bolts, they must be cut off with a grinder.

The second difference is the shape of the frame. The examples in the photo of a do-it-yourself swing made from a profile pipe prove that there are two types of designs:

  1. Swings on a U-shaped frame are the most unstable. They only have two supports and a top crossbar. The swing can only be installed permanently. Sometimes they are placed on the surface of the ground, welded from below to the pipe supports to form the letter “T”. However, the stability of such a design is very questionable. For stationary installation, the supports are well buried in the ground; it is advisable to concrete them with your own hands. However, when it comes to assembly, the frame wins. Firstly, less profile pipe is required. Secondly, the simplicity of the design affects the speed of assembly.
  2. A swing on an L-shaped frame is more stable. They can be installed permanently, with the supports buried in the ground, or simply placed on the surface of the earth. In the second option, the lower ends of the supports are reinforced with jumpers. Sometimes, for stability, an additional bridge is placed on the sides between the supports. From the side, such a frame resembles the letter “A”. The stability of the swing is created by four supports. The posts seem to be wedged into the ground, preventing the frame from loosening while riding on the swing.

Advice!
Despite the difficulty of making it yourself, it is advisable to give preference to a swing with a frame on four posts. There are two types of swings based on the installation method:

  1. Stationary. The legs of the frame are buried into the ground with your own hands. They can be concreted or fixed with anchors to the foundation.

  2. Portable. The swing frame is simply installed on the surface of the ground. If necessary, they are moved to another place.

Portable swings are most often assembled with your own hands from a lightweight profile thin-walled pipe. Due to this, the weight of the structure is reduced and mobility is improved.

Continuing the review of the types of swings, it is worth paying attention to the number of seats. Based on this parameter, structures made from profiled steel pipes can be divided into several groups:

  1. Single swings are equipped with a seat that can accommodate only one person. The design has small dimensions; it is usually created with your own hands in a mobile version.

  2. Multi-person swings with single seats make it possible for several people to ride at the same time, but they are all independent of each other. Everyone can swing to a comfortable height.

  3. Multi-seat group swings have a wide bench as a seat. It can accommodate several people at the same time. Since there is one common seat, all the people sitting on it depend on each other. They cannot swing individually to different heights.

According to the age category, do-it-yourself swings from professional pipes are assembled into three types:

  1. Children's. Such swings are intended only for children. The seat is often made in the form of a chair with handrails and a removable front crossbar. The safety element prevents the child from falling while swinging.

    Advice! Children's swings are assembled from a thin-walled profile pipe. It is better to make them small, collapsible, mobile, so that if necessary they can be brought into the house or taken outside.

  2. Adults. This category includes swings of increased strength and large dimensions. The structure is assembled from a thick-walled profile pipe. The seat is usually a bench seat. The frame must withstand the load of the seat itself and the adults sitting on it. It is difficult for a child to swing such a swing. Sometimes, for convenience, benches are equipped with a footrest.

  3. For any age. There are many requirements for such a swing. Since adults and children will ride them, a reinforced frame made of profile pipe is needed. The seat should be easy to rock and be comfortable for a child to jump onto the ground.

At the end of the review of the varieties, it is worth considering the method of attaching the seat to the crossbar. There are a lot of options here:

  1. The steel hinge is fixed to the profile pipe crossbar with two bolts. A chain, rope or cable is hooked to the eye.
  2. The swing unit in the form of a carabiner is fixed to the profile pipe by inserting a threaded rod into the through hole and tightened with nuts. The mount is suitable for a children's swing, as it is designed for a small load.

  3. Eye bolts are secured with nuts in the same way as a carabiner. A threaded rod is passed through a hole in the profile pipe.

  4. The spring fastening is designed for light loads. The knot is used for a children's swing.

  5. Hinges in the form of clamps do not require drilling holes in the crossbar, which weakens its strength. The units are placed and clamped onto the profile pipe with bolts.

The movable unit is connected to the seat by rods. For light swings, use a climbing rope and thin chains. A cable is suitable, but it is unpleasant for the skin of the hands when touched. It is best to fix heavy benches with rods made from a small-section profile pipe, for example, 20x20 mm. Regular lugs won't work here. The movable hinge unit is used with bearings. You can attach a heavy bench to the eyes without bearings, but you will need strong chains.

Manufacturing of cantilever supports

You should begin your work by making the elements of the seat and backrest. It is necessary to prepare 6 bars 500 mm long (section 50x80 mm).

Rice. 1. Three ready-made support elements assembled from 6 bars.

They are connected in pairs at an angle of 110° using the tongue-and-groove method or using a “half-tree” pattern. The strength of the connection is achieved by setting the M 10 bolt and wood glue. The manufactured structural elements are identical, however, the corner that will be installed in the center of the bench will have to be trimmed after final installation. The reason is that the load on it will be shelves of slightly shorter length.

Rice. 2. Finished support element in profile

The horizontal part of the cantilever support parts, located along the edges of the bench, needs to be reinforced on 2 sides with overlays made of 10 mm plywood, glued and secured with self-tapping screws. After gluing, the bench bases should be given time to dry. The identity of all 3 elements will be achieved by using a conductor template. The collection is carried out one by one, strictly according to the pattern.

Dimensions of a swing made from a profile pipe with your own hands

The dimensions of the swing are determined based on its type. They take into account the age category, how many people the design is designed for, and the method of riding. The height of the racks depends on the last parameter. You can swing while sitting or standing. If it is a boat swing, where swinging occurs between two people standing opposite each other, the height of the supports is 2.5 m. In other options, the optimal height is 2 m. Family swings with a bench are made low - approximately 1.6 m high.

The width of the seat is determined from the fact that 50 cm is allocated for one person. A gap is left between the posts made of a profile pipe and the seat. The total width of the crossbar depends on it. If the seat is fixed with a rope, a gap of 35 cm is left. For a chain or rods made of a profile pipe, this parameter is reduced to 25 cm.

Swing with bench for several people

This type of family rocking chair will fit originally into the layout of a summer cottage. They are mass-produced in a large assortment. Portable or stationary are equipped with a canopy (awning) or with a hard shelter (wood, polycarbonate). A swing with a roof is more profitable, the metal elements do not get hot in the sun, and there is protection from rain. Additionally, mosquito curtains are installed.

A swing with a bench, designed for 2-3 people, is a typical model for garden plots.

Basic design elements.

A-frame designEquipment
Frame
  • 2 racks (legs connected at an angle);
  • 2 spacers (lower, upper);
  • crossbar (crossbar).
Bench, seat
  • 4 main seat support bars (longitudinal, transverse);
  • additional seat reinforcement;
  • 2 backrest stands;
  • 2 armrests and their supports;
  • wooden slats for seating, bench backs.

Dimensions are calculated taking into account the model.

There are 2 types of connecting parts. Welded is preferable, since the screw fastener unwinds under the influence of vibration when rocking. It is necessary to periodically tighten the bolts and nuts.

There are two types of connections of structural elements: welded and prefabricated

A hole is drilled in the crossbar, a bolt is inserted into it, to which a ring nut is attached. The bench is suspended using a connecting ring. The connection is periodically lubricated to avoid damage to the mechanism and creaking.

The bench is suspended from the crossbar on ropes, chains, metal cables

The construction of an iron swing begins with the installation of a frame. For portable structures, it is more correct to make a connecting frame from a metal profile along the lower perimeter of the frame. Stationary - dug into the ground to a depth of 50–60 cm, then concreted.

All metal structural elements are treated with compounds that prevent the formation of rust and painted.

U-shaped swing

They are structurally simpler and consist of side posts and a crossbar. Stability is provided by the upper corner strips connecting the supports.

The U-shaped structure is less stable, so such swings are buried in the ground, followed by concreting

When drawing up a plan or model diagram, you need to take into account some points. The seats are suspended at a height of 50–60 cm. A minimum distance of 30 cm is made from the side supports.

What you need to make a swing from corrugated pipes

First of all, for the frame of the swing you will need a profile pipe. The cross-section is selected taking into account the intended load. If the frame is welded from a pipe with a cross-section of 40x40 mm and a wall thickness of 1 mm, then it will withstand up to 200 kg. A swing for adults or with a heavy bench is made by hand from a pipe with a cross-section of 70x70 mm and a wall thickness of 2 mm.

The rods, lintels, and canopy frame are made from pipes of a smaller cross-section: 15x15, 20x20 mm. The profile for these elements does not have to be square. A rectangular pipe will do.

The seat is traditionally made by hand from wood. A timber with a wall size of 50x50 or 50x40 mm, a board with a thickness of 20-25 mm, is suitable. Sometimes seats are made from plastic window sills and car tires.

Depending on the expected load, a suitable moving unit is prepared: a hinge, a spring, carabiners and other devices.

The tools you need are a grinder, a welding machine, an electric drill, a tape measure and a level. You may need a hammer, pliers, a wood saw, or a plane.

Creating a swing base

After making the swinging part, it was time to work on the frame, the base of the structure. To create side A-shaped racks, bars 2000 mm long (section 100x120 mm) are used. They intersect at a distance of 300 mm from the upper end, the recommended angle is 40°. Based on these considerations, it is necessary to mark and select half-tree grooves.

Rice. 6. Prepared bars for the fixed part of the swing

At the bottom, the bars are connected by a horizontal jumper. The distance from the intersection to the bottom edge is 300 mm. The timber for the lintel is taken of the same cross-section, and the fastening is made “half-wood”. The joints are secured with bolts and wood glue, and the A-shaped posts acquire the required rigidity.

When marking and preparing the bars on them, you need to mark the places for future grooves into which two crossbars will be attached. The first of them is a powerful beam, which will hold the suspended part. The second will be located below, at the rear of the structure; no significant load is expected here. This is an additional connecting element that gives stability to the frame. A beam of 40-50 mm is enough for it. It is attached with self-tapping screws to the half-tree side posts.

Rice. 7. A-shaped side design

The upper cross beam is securely attached to the assembled A-shaped structures with metal corners. At the connection point, fastening elements with a ring are installed, to which chains are attached using a carabiner.

How to make a garden swing from a profile pipe with your own hands

When the material has been prepared and the type of structure has been determined, production begins. You should always have a drawing of a swing made from a profile pipe with dimensions at hand, as it is needed for cutting workpieces.

Step-by-step assembly instructions:

  1. According to the drawing, blanks are cut from the profile pipe. You will need long elements for the racks, one crossbar. The required number of jumpers is cut from a pipe of a smaller cross-section.

  2. When all the blanks are cut, they begin to assemble the frame. The first to make is the knot where the top of the supports is connected to the crossbar. If the swing is dismountable, then the pipe is drilled and bolted together. To strengthen the corners, spacers are installed. They can be secured with metal screws.

  3. If a non-removable structure is assumed, then you will have to weld a swing from a profile pipe with your own hands using a welding machine. For aesthetics, the seams are cleaned with a grinder.

  4. The finished pipe frame is installed in a permanent place. If the supports are to be concreted, then a hole is dug under each rack. A layer of crushed stone 20 cm thick is poured onto the bottom of the hole. The supports are bursting inside the hole with stones and filled with liquid concrete.

  5. The locations of the moving units are marked on the crossbar. Holes are drilled in the pipe for the anchor. The threaded connection must be secured with an additional lock nut. It will prevent the fasteners from loosening during use of the swing.

  6. To enjoy the swing, rain or shine, you will need a roof. The frame is welded in the shape of a rectangle from a thin pipe. To prevent precipitation from accumulating, the flat roof is mounted at a slope. A semicircular shelter looks prettier. You will have to bend arcs from the pipe. For this purpose, they use not a square, but a flat profile. Such a pipe is easier to bend and it is easier to attach roofing material to it.

  7. A single seat or a bench is more comfortable with a semicircular back. For the side elements of the frame, two arcs are bent. They are welded together with jumpers. The finished frame should resemble the shape of a bucket. Hinges are welded to the four corners of the structure. The chain will be fixed to the fasteners.

  8. When the seat frame is ready, chains are attached to the eyes on the crossbar. Having measured the required length, cut off the extra links.

  9. The free ends of the chains are connected to the eyes on the seat frame, and it is leveled. If there is a skew, the desired section is lengthened or shortened by changing the number of links.

  10. When the children's swing is welded from a profile pipe with their own hands, they begin to design it. The seat trim is made from slats. Wooden blanks are fixed with bolts. The frame is degreased, coated with a protective primer, and painted. Colored polycarbonate is a good choice for roofing. The sheet is screwed with self-tapping screws and sealing washers.

The finished entertainment is worth trying out immediately.

The video shows an example of making a swing:

Selection of material, tools and place to work

If possible and good carpentry skills, hardwood should be used as a material. A bench made of such wood will be especially resistant to precipitation and, therefore, more durable. However, processing hard wood (oak, hornbeam, beech) is a labor-intensive task. Therefore, without a good tool and knowledge of the matter, it is better not to take on such material.

A simpler option is to use high-quality dried pine. The tree must be free of large knots, which significantly reduce the strength of the structure. In order not to have to plan wood to the required size yourself, purchase ready-made blanks (timber, board) right away.

Tools you will need:

  • an angle grinder, known to most of us as a “grinder” (useful for cutting off protruding ends of metal parts);
  • manual milling machine (optional, but some operations will go faster with it);
  • hand sander (or sandpaper);
  • drill with a set of drills;
  • screwdriver;
  • clamps;
  • hacksaws;
  • chisels;
  • hammer.

Don't forget to make sure you have:

  • a supply of self-tapping screws coated with anti-corrosion protection;
  • furniture bolts M 10 with round heads,
  • varnish for the final coating of the bench;
  • wood glue.

When setting up a workplace, you should take into account the presence of:

  • access to fresh air;
  • good lighting;
  • convenient workbench.

Note! An unstable “flying” bench can cause serious injury. This explains the importance of maintaining the sequence and timing of all technological processes.

Useful tips

To ensure that the swing brings pleasure to all family members, a few tips will help you create the structure correctly:

  1. If a chain is selected for hanging the seat, check the integrity of all links. They are connected to the eyes with metal rings. They have one cut. When the chain link and the eye are connected by a ring, the cut is welded.
  2. It is not advisable to make the seat back at a right angle. It is important to maintain a slight tilt or give it a semicircular bend.
  3. Polycarbonate allows light to pass through. When choosing the color of a sheet, you must remember that the light atmosphere created under the roof can have a beneficial or uncomfortable effect on a person’s subconscious.

Before starting production of the play complex, it is optimal to visit the park and playgrounds. In these places you can try out different swing options for convenience and see their design. The most successful option is easier to copy than to think through all the design components yourself.

Design features, advantages and disadvantages

In terms of their design, the do-it-yourself swing-bench differs in:

  • according to the material of manufacture: metal, wood or made of several materials (for example, a seat is made of wood, supports are metal);
  • types of seat fastening - using ropes, bars, chains or metal pipes;
  • installation methods - a bench swing made by yourself can be mobile or installed permanently.

Advice! When choosing one or another model, you should immediately take into account the possibility of storage and repair.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before choosing which swing you will make, you should consider all the pros and cons of a particular model.

For example:

  • completely wooden structures are more massive and stable, swings with metal supports are less stable and require more careful calculation;
  • wood is susceptible to climatic conditions, if not properly cared for, wooden swings may begin to dry out, crack, etc.;
  • when making metal elements of a swing, you need to remember that you will need additional tools - a welding machine, electrodes, as well as certain skills - the ability to cook (if the welding seam is not beautiful, it can ruin the entire appearance);
  • hanging a seat with ropes is the easiest way to attach it, but rope is not a durable material and is very susceptible to weather conditions; a bench with chains would be a good solution.

Advice! If you are making a rocking bench for a summer house with or without a canopy for the first time, it is recommended to choose a completely wooden model. Wood is a softer material than metal and any defects can be easily corrected.
