Hardboard, or fiberboard, is one of the most popular modern building materials. Fiberboard is used for finishing floors and walls, installing interior partitions, and for roof insulation. This is an excellent material for making furniture and doors. When purchasing a sheet, they evaluate the density, size, production time, transportation and storage conditions. The main criteria for choosing the right fiberboard are: thickness and dimensions of the sheet, price of the material. This will be discussed in this article.
Fiberboard sheets are available in thicknesses from 3.2 to 16 mm
Construction material: fiberboard
New technologies and building materials make it possible to produce end products of good quality and with significant savings in raw materials . One of the most popular sheet materials is fiberboard. Suitable for finishing walls and floors, installing interior partitions, and making furniture. If we compare it with similar materials, its cost will be slightly higher. This is explained by the fact that the board is of good quality and perfectly replaces natural material.
When purchasing a sheet, an assessment is made of the size, density, production time, storage and transportation conditions. But one of the main selection criteria is price. The cost of such a sheet is much more favorable than that of natural wood. In addition, it is easy to install and process.
What does the price depend on?
The amount of funds depends on several components:
- Thickness _ Plates can consist of several layers (from 1 to 5 or more). The more material used in manufacturing, the higher the cost.
- Variety . Characterizes quality. First grade hardboard eliminates the presence of chips, unevenness and other defects. The lower the grade, the worse the quality. Consequently, the cost of the first grade will be higher.
- Formaldehyde levels . Since the substance is toxic, its presence in the product is undesirable. The content level depends on the type of sheet material. The less it is, the higher the price.
- Coverage . Gives additional properties, for example, moisture resistance. You will have to pay extra for applying additional layers (the average price of a laminated coating is 300 rubles).
- Manufacturer . Half of the cost depends on the plant where the material is produced. Well-known manufacturers that produce finished products of good quality and provide a guarantee sell them at a higher price.
- Manufacturer's location . Transportation costs are added.
Overall dimensions and type of board are also important parameters in determining the price.
The cost of a fiberboard sheet depending on its type
According to GOST 4598-86 , all fiberboards are divided according to manufacturing method and purpose. Building material is divided into grades:
- Soft (no glue or other chemical binders are used in production). This type is characterized by high porosity and low density (minimum value - 100 kg/m³). The average price is from 125 to 300 rubles .
- Semi-hard , hard and super-hard with a density from 400 to 1100 kg/m³. The main scope of application is furniture manufacturing, carriage building, construction. The average price of one sheet is from 250 rubles .
- Insulating . A product with a low density of 250 kg/m³. Withstands low mechanical load. One sheet of fiberboard can be purchased for about 350 rubles .
- Finishing . Provides lamination of one side. The average cost of a sheet with this coating is 300 rubles .
Bulk purchasing will significantly reduce costs. The cost of fiberboard is quite reasonable. If it is used in the area specified by the manufacturer, then a durable building element can be obtained.
Density of slabs
The soft material is too porous, it can be compared to felt. The obvious disadvantage in this case is the low moisture protection rating. The loose structure absorbs water.
With semi-solid slabs and above, things are much better. Atmospheric precipitation will not cause deformation. But there is a drawback here - poor plasticity. A small load will lead to the formation of creases.
The table shows the minimum density values.
Material | Minimum density, kg/m³ |
Soft | 100 |
Semi-solid | 400 |
Solid | 850 |
Super hard | 950 |
Approximate price of a fiberboard sheet depending on overall dimensions
Types of fiberboard are determined by the panel width and thickness. Approximate price of one sheet of standard size 2140×1220 depending on thickness, in rubles:
- 2.5 mm – 135.
- 3 mm – 140.
- 3.2 mm – 150.
Fiberboard format 2440×1220, in rubles:

Fiberboard in the 2745×1700 format can be purchased for an average of 266 rubles . Russian-made products are much cheaper than imported materials. To purchase a product profitably, it is recommended to compare pricing policies for products of the same format.
Fibreboard: sheet thickness and dimensions, material price
The possibility of obtaining the required working area, the minimum amount of waste and the final strength of the finished product depend on the correct determination of the required dimensions of the building material.
When performing finishing activities, preference is given to whole slabs. To determine the number of pieces, the total area of the working area is calculated, taking into account cutting. In some cases, you can purchase separate blanks that can be purchased in woodworking shops. The total cost of such residues includes the cost of cutting services.
Before cutting sheets for finishing work and thermal insulation, detailed measurements of walls, floors and ceilings are taken. Then, based on standard slabs of different sizes, variants of their cutting schemes are drawn up, and the number of residues in each case is compared. The most optimal option is selected, which achieves the minimum amount of trimmings.
Fiberboard panels are available in various sizes
Helpful advice! Knowing the required dimensions of fiberboard, you can decide in advance on the method of transportation and a convenient place to store the boards.
Standard sizes of fiberboard sheets
Fiberboard is considered an improved and more advanced analogue of chipboard. Orgalin has increased strength and density of the material. These parameters were improved thanks to more thorough grinding of the raw material followed by pressing under high pressure.
The thickness of fiberboard varies depending on the density of the material and is 3.5-25mm. Each type of fiberboard has its own size range. Soft and medium-density fiberboards are the thickest. The thickness of these plates is 8, 12, 16 and 25 mm. Semi-solid fiberboards are available in thicknesses of 6, 8 and 12 mm. The thinnest are hard and extra-hard fiberboards with thicknesses of 3.2 mm, 4.5 mm and 6 mm.
The sizes of fiberboard sheets of different hardness are almost the same. They are determined based on the specific equipment that the manufacturer uses. The length of the slabs is 1220-3660 mm, width - 1200-2140 mm.
Front and back side of fiberboard sheet
Standard sizes of fiberboard sheets according to GOST 4598-86:
- soft fiberboard: length – 1220, 1600, 1800, 2500, 2700 and 3000; width – 1220 mm;
- semi-hard, hard, extra hard fiberboard: length – 1220, 1700, 1800, 2050, 2500, 2745, 3050, 3350 and 3660; width – 610, 1220, 1525, 1830 and 2410 mm.
Helpful advice! The plate can be made to order with dimensions different from the standard. But the maximum dimensions for soft boards are 5.5 m, for hard fiberboard - 6.1 m.
Areas of application of fiberboard depending on the thickness of the product
The thickness of the fiberboard sheet and its strength are inversely related. Accordingly, before starting construction work, it is necessary to determine the type of fiberboard according to its purpose.
For thermal insulation cladding of walls, ceilings and ceilings, porous soft fiberboard with a thickness of 8-12 mm, which resembles felt, is used. These slabs are also a good sound insulator.
The thickness of fiberboard panels can be 3, 6, 12 and 16 mm
The semi-solid type of boards, which resemble thick cardboard up to 12mm thick, can be used to make furniture, as cabinet backs and drawers. This material is used as a substrate for future flooring.
Solid boards up to 6 mm thick are an excellent cladding material for walls and ceilings. I use it for installing interior partitions and for making door panels.
Super-hard 6 mm thick boards are used for cladding floors, doors and furniture. Unlike solid fiberboard, they are impregnated with resins, and a special PVC-based film is applied to the surface.
To correctly determine the size of a fiberboard sheet, the width and length of which are different, it is necessary to measure the dimensions of the working surface. By multiplying the linear indicators, the total area of each individual plot is obtained. Adding them up, we get the total number of sheets for purchase. Next, all site layouts are located in a rectilinear plane, and a rectangular outline is drawn up that covers all images. After this, from the available standard sizes of fiberboard, the most acceptable ones are selected, which will ensure the minimum remaining material.
Thin fiberboard panels can be used as a backing for laminate flooring or to decorate the back walls of cabinets
Fibreboard price per sheet of product
The cost of fiberboard depends on the overall dimensions, type of material, manufacturer, and the presence of intermediaries. Soft fiberboard, regardless of size, has the lowest cost. Imported products will cost much more, which does not always lead to good quality. For example, hard fiberboard measuring 2140x1220 mm and thickness 3.2 mm will cost 150 rubles. from a Russian manufacturer, and 210 rubles. from the imported one.
Untreated fiberboard measuring 2745x1700 mm with a thickness of 3.2 mm will cost around 460 rubles, and the price of laminated fiberboard per sheet will be about 1026 rubles.
In order to consciously make a choice of a Russian-made product, it is necessary to compare the pricing policy of one type of product of the same thickness.
Price comparison for solid fiberboard measuring 2140x1220 mm and thickness 3.2 mm:
Manufacturer | Price, rub./piece | Price, rub/m² |
Vendor | 132 | 50,77 |
StroyVey | 126 | 48,46 |
Marina | 179 | 68,81 |
An important criterion is the actual location of the manufacturer. The closer it is, the lower the transport component of the price will be. You can save a lot by purchasing in bulk.

Standard thickness and dimensions of fiberboard sheets. Product price: what affects it?
All well-known fiberboard manufacturers produce products in a certain format with standard sizes. Why then do the pricing policies of different manufacturers differ significantly? After all, the method of manufacturing fiberboard has remained unchanged for many years, and the range of types and colors is similar.
The final cost is influenced, first of all, by the big name of a well-known manufacturer. Then its location is taken into account. And this is directly related to the transportation costs that the manufacturer spends when producing the material.
The next criterion that affects the cost of the final product is the size and thickness of the product. Depending on the dimensions of the material, different amounts of raw materials and chemical impurities are consumed.
The average price of a fiberboard sheet is 100-1000 rubles
Grade also affects the cost of the material. Fiberboards come in two grades: Grade I has no visible damage; for Grade II, minor dents and scratches are allowed on the front side of the product.
The next parameter is the type of fiberboard. Here, the composition of the raw material, its quantity, processing method and the presence of impurities play an important role.
The presence of a protective layer and decorative coating adds an additional markup to the cost of production. Here, the manufacturer spends on costs associated with the technology of applying the required texture to the slab, so the price of a laminated fiberboard sheet, the dimensions and thickness of which are clearly standardized, will be much higher than that of a simple unsanded fiberboard of the same dimensions.
The table below shows the estimated cost of fiberboard. Prices for laminated, painted and untreated sheets are indicated in rubles per sq. m. meter:
Thickness, mm | Untreated coating | Painted coating | Laminated coating
Solid | Soft | Solid | Soft | Solid | Soft
3,2 | 57-60 | 40 | 90-95 | 85 | 185-193 | 70 |
6 | 130-140 | 89 | 120 | 107-115 | 200-216 | 100-115 |
12 | — | 95 | — | 136 | — | 140 |
16 | — | 155 | — | 160 | — | 160-190 |
Helpful advice! Some manufacturers sell substandard sheets that, due to their dimensions or external condition (damaged edges), do not meet GOST requirements. These defects do not have a significant negative impact on the quality of the panels, but will help save on the cost of the material.
The range in pricing for a fiberboard sheet is quite significant, therefore, if a whole sheet is too much to complete a small amount of work, you can ask repair and construction stores about the availability of fiberboard scraps of different lengths, which are sold at a reduced price.
